From whence it came

• Original HTML has its roots in SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language)
• First real HTML was formally "defined and agreed upon" in 1994 by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
• The W3C, the World Wide Web Consortium, was founded in 1994 to develop common standards for the evolution of the World Wide Web
• HTML 4.0 is the current standard recommended by W3C.
